SPY: Could this be a 2013 Mercedes-Benz S 63 AMG (W 222) super-fast sedan or not?

We will have the first look at the new S-Class within a few weeks, when the primary information and photos are to be officially released by Mercedes-Benz. In the mean time, testing for the W 222 generation of the premium limousine is continuing, with a new prototype being spotted in a German city shortly after another test vehicle was photographed at Nürburgring last week. The silver-coloured S-Class captured recently features what seems to be a sports design package courtesy of AMG.

The more pronounced front apron, baring wider air intakes for a better cooling and a more dynamic design, and the thin multi-spoke wheels with large diameter indicates this model could either be an early development car for the future generation of the S 63 AMG super-fast sedan or just a standard S-Class equipped with the all-so-popular AMG Sport visual enhancer, which is now more dramatically styled - see also the new A-Class and GL-Class. However, we do recognize the smaller exhausts at the back don't fit with the image of an Affalterbach-tuned Mercedes-Benz - but bare in mind this is a test vehicle, so anything is possible.

When the new S-Class is released on the market, it will be available with a choice of efficient gasoline and diesel powerplants, all of them comprising BlueEFFICIENCY measures. The 204 hp 4-cylinder diesel on the S 250 CDI will be the entry-level. The list continues with the S 350 CDI with 265 hp and the S 350 boasting the BlueDIRECT V6 unit, for whom we do expect a decent power upgrade up to 354 hp, as speculated in the last year. A PLUG-IN HYBRID variant is also in cards: a 306 hp V6 petrol burner and a 109 hp electric motor make out the powertrain for this eco-friendly S-Class. Until a new S 600 V12 high-end model is revealed in the course of 2013 or 2014, the range-topper will be the V8-powered S 500 with 435 hp or possibly more (450-460 hp). The new S 63 AMG comes spring next year and will probably sport a beefier version of the current 5.5-litre V8 BITURBO engine - peak output could increase up to 560 hp. The next generation of the S 65 AMG sports limo is slated to appear nearing 2015 and should highlight company's brand new V12 engine, that could easily be rated at 650 hp.

LATER UPATE: Carscoop's spy pics shot near the AMG development base further strengthen our belief this camouflaged prototype is in fact an S 63 AMG and not just a pre-series S-Class equipped with the AMG Sports Package.
